Aston Villa’s next signing could spell bad news for Morgan Rogers
Aston Villa have relaunched their interest in bringing Marco Asensio back to Villa Park.
Villa are believed to be exploring Asensio’s availability, after he enjoyed a successful loan spell in Birmingham last season.
Asensio has a year left on his contract at Paris Saint-Germain and could be available either for a season-long loan or a permanent transfer.
Either way, it looks like Asensio won’t be playing much of a role at PSG this season.
Asensio signing could spell bad news for Morgan Rogers
Aston Villa were fairly reliant on loan stars Asensio and Marcus Rashford at the back end of last season.
That left Villa’s other attacking stars pushed either on the bench or pushed into unfamiliar positions.
It was expected that Morgan Rogers might be able to thrive in the number 10 position after Asensio’s initial loan spell ended.

However, if Asensio is signed, there’s every chance that Rogers could be pushed out onto the wing again.
The English talent had been linked with a big-money move to Arsenal earlier this summer.
Rogers injured his ankle in Villa’s most recent pre-season friendly against AS Roma, but is still expected to be available for the Premier League opener against Newcastle on Saturday.
Buendia and Dalen could also suffer if Asensio signs
Emi Buendia and Donyell Malen are two players who could see reduced game time if Asensio signs for Villa.
Both players have enjoyed promising form in Villa’s pre-season friendlies. Malen has scored some impressive goals while Buendia has been a constant menace to his opponents, but it would be expected for Asensio to jump ahead of them in the pecking order if he signs.

Of course, it’s good for Unai Emery to have a selection headache at this stage of the season. As always, strength in depth will become key as the season drags on. Still, it will be a blow for these players who would have been excited to show what they can do once the Premier League season starts.
If Villa find themselves needing to balance the books to offset the cost of Asensio’s transfer, one of these players could even find themselves being told to search for a new club.
