Rogers set for Aston Villa agreement as approach made for new forward

Aston Villa are set to push ahead in their attempts to retain Morgan Rogers for the future.

The midfielder has been the subject of significant interest from several clubs in the Premier League, but the Villans have been resolute in their desire to keep the England international.

Instead, Ollie Watkins has looked the likelier to leave amid interest from Newcastle United and Manchester United, but talk of a potential move has died down in recent weeks.

Villa have signed just one player so far this summer, with goalkeeper Marco Bizot arriving from Ligue 1 club Brest.

Rogers set to agree fresh terms

Rogers was the breakthrough star of the Premier League last season.

The 23-year-old had made his way into Unai Emery’s starting XI following his arrival in January 2024, but was not expected to feature from the off at the start of the 2024/25 season.

But when he did, Rogers excelled, scoring 14 goals and providing 15 assists in all competitions for Villa and establishing himself among the most important players at Villa Park.

Naturally, clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea have made their interest in the midfielder known, but the Villans have never indicated any intention of entertaining a bid.

Instead, decision-makers at Villa Park have moved to tie Rogers down to a fresh contract, and according to Mail Sport (30 July), the England international is expected to put pen to paper.

The news will come as a massive relief to Villa fans, who have fallen in love with the 23-year-old since his arrival from Middlesbrough.

Villa targeting Aghehowa

Mail Sport have also revealed that Villa have made an enquiry for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, with Emery keen to strengthen his options in attack.

The 21-year-old joined the Portuguese giants last summer from Atletico Madrid, after a move to Chelsea broke down in the final stages.

But in Liga Portugal, Aghehowa has excelled, scoring 19 goals and providing three assists in his maiden campaign.

However, Porto are understood to be unwilling to listen to offers that fall below £55million, which is likely to cause difficulty for Villa.

If Watkins does leave, Aghehowa is likely to be among the top options the Villans will look to replace him with.
