Digne’s future decided as Aston Villa set to agree £6.2m deal – Exclusive

This article includes exclusive comment from former Aston Villa scout Bryan King.

Lucas Digne has been tipped as a player who could potentially depart Aston Villa this summer.

The Frenchman has spent four seasons at the second city outfit, but had an uncharacteristically poor campaign last time out.

Villa have faced interest in Digne from Fenerbahce this summer, and it has been suggested that they may be keen to sell the left-back in order to hand more gametime to the impressive Ian Maatsen.

The Dutchman caught the eye with some strong performances towards the end of 2024/25, and Unai Emery will surely be hoping that he can kick on this term and develop into one of the Premier League’s best left-backs.

Aston Villa to hand Digne an extension of his current contract

Digne’s future at Villa took a surprising turn a few days ago, following the news that he may be about to receive a new contract to prolong his stay in B6.

The defender is now 32, and with a more youthful option available to the Villans in Maatsen, many fans have been frustrated by the latest update regarding the former Everton man.

He is one of the highest-paid players at the club at present, and it will likely cost a sizeable amount of money to keep him around.

Ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes that Digne could be set to receive an extension of his current deal at Villa Park.

“He (Digne) seems to have done the job at Villa,” King said.

“Why shouldn’t they give him another year?

“You can’t beat experience, and if you want to bring a young player in, then great. But it’s nice to have a bit of cover of something goes wrong with him, his form or an injury or whatever.

“It’s always good to have experienced cover.

“I would say Villa will offer Digne the same deal.”

Digne deal to cost Villa £6.2m per year

Digne’s new contract is not likely to be a cheap agreement for Villa.

The defender is currently commanding a weekly wage in the region of £120,000, according to estimates from Capology.

That means he earns a figure close to £6.24million per year at Villa Park, so any new contract would be an extremely lucrative commitment for the Villans in the context of their summer.

Digne is a player that Emery seems to trust, however, it isn’t prudent from a business perspective to offer that level of money to a player who is already the wrong side of 30.

The defender is still a useful option for the Villans to have around, but they should only be giving him a new deal if he is willing to settle for a reduction in his wages.
