Aston Villa fans collectively groan at new Lucas Digne contract developments

Aston Villa fans haven’t had it easy during this transfer window.

They’ve been bombarded with daily headlines about losing their best players, while simultaneously being nowhere near to signing an exciting new player themselves.

There’s one piece of ‘good’ news emerging out of Villa Park regarding a potential new contract for Lucas Digne, but it seems many Villa fans aren’t delighted about that either.

Villa fans groan over potential new contract for Digne

Digne made 45 appearances for Villa last season, but a lot of Villa fans are more excited about the prospect of using Ian Maatsen as their first-choice left-back.

Many are aware that Digne is one of the highest-paid players at the club and would prefer to see him removed from the wage bill.

For that reason, there has been a noticeably sour reaction to speculation that Digne is set to be offered a new deal at Villa Park.

Jacob Tanswell, Aston Villa writer for The Athletic, broke the news on social media platform X.

Most Villa fans who replied to him either said that they want Digne out of the club or kept on reduced wages.

Villa need to cut costs and Digne would seem like an obvious choice

Villa’s financial situation seems to be a point of frustration among many fans.

The Midlands club is an awkward place where they’re expected to compete with the Premier League’s best for a spot in the Champions League, even though they’re far more limited financially.

Perhaps that’s the price of recruiting a manager in Unai Emery who’s capable of batting outside his league.

Whether he likes it or not, Emery will need to find a way to trim his existing wage bill if he wants to bring in some new superstars.

Digne seems like an easy target for these cost-cutting measures. He’s 32 years old, and Emery has a ready-made replacement for him in Maatsen.

What’s more, the Frenchman operates best in a system with wing-backs, rather than a back four.

Villa should absolutely be offering him reduced wages or selling him this summer, and hopefully collecting a decent transfer fee. Earlier this summer, Digne had been linked with a transfer to Atletico Madrid.
