Sheffield Wednesday new manager: Ex-Aston Villa boss in running after Rohl exit news
Aston Villa’s old managers rarely go on to have much success after leaving Villa Park.
Dean Smith, who guided the Birmingham outfit to the Premier League, took Leicester City down in his next job and is now in the MLS.
Steve Bruce hasn’t fared much better. After flopping at Aston Villa, the former Manchester United defender went on to struggle at Newcastle and West Brom and is now in League One with Blackpool.
Now, this pattern seems to be continuing into the summer.

Steven Gerrard among favourites to go to Sheffield Wednesday
Steven Gerrard had an awful spell at Villa Park as manager.
The Liverpool legend had the Birmingham outfit in a relegation scrap before Unai Emery came in and took Villa to European football in the same campaign.
Since then, the former England international has had a stint in Saudi Arabia at Al-Ettifaq before leaving in January 2025.
Gerrard had been linked to the Rangers job before Russell Martin bagged the post this summer.
Now, the 45-year-old could be in line for the Sheffield Wednesday job amid rumours that Danny Rohl could leave.
Bet Victor (29 June) has Gerrard at 10/1 to become the new manager, making him the sixth favourite.
As it stands, Henrik Pedersen has the shortest odds at 4/6, with Luke Williams second at 6/1.

Aston Villa are lucky to be rid of Gerrard
While Emery is no doubt an elite manager, much of Villa’s downfall under Gerrard was due to the fact that he is a poor manager.
How he had the Birmingham outfit in a relegation battle with a squad filled with such quality is simply baffling, and it became clear quickly that he was not ready to manage in the Premier League.
Steven Gerrard’s record at Aston Villa | |
Games managed | 40 |
Wins | 13 |
Draws | 8 |
Losses | 19 |

Unfortunately, he would likely struggle at Sheffield Wednesday as well if he opted to go to Hillsborough.
The Championship side are in a complete mess at the moment, and if Gerrard wants to get his management career back on track, he must avoid the job.
