José Mourinho sets sights on Monchi as Aston Villa exit news emerges

Monchi will be central to Aston Villa’s preparations for the upcoming season.

Unai Emery’s side reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals last season in what was their first taste of Europe’s premier club competition since 1982.

However, Villa will be absent from the competition this year following a frustrating end to their domestic campaign.

Monchi will have to work around Villa’s financial worries to strengthen the squad for Emery, or the club could risk facing heavy fines or even a points deduction from the Premier League.

Villa’s President of Football Operations will play a crucial role in deciding the West Midlands outfit’s fate next season, provided he remains with the club.

Monchi is being targeted by Fenerbahçe

With all the focus on bringing new faces to Villa Park this summer, the last thing they would be expecting is to lose someone as influential as Monchi.

However, that threat is now very real, with Monchi in line for a potential exit from B6 after developments in Europe.

The 56-year-old has been touted for a move back to Sevilla, where he previously worked with Emery for several years, and now Fenerbahçe are contemplating a move as well [GiveMeSport, 16 June].

The Turkish giants are led by Jose Mourinho, and his links with the super-agent Jorge Mendes are believed to be the source of the possible move for Monchi, who also shares a relationship with the Portuguese duo.

Villa can’t afford to lose Monchi this summer

Monchi has overseen mixed results in the transfer market since he arrived at Villa Park. As with all recruitment in football, his work has returned some gems for the club, but also some players who perhaps haven’t justified their price tag.

Morgan Rogers has proved to be an inspired piece of business for just £7million, but it’s hard to argue that Villa didn’t overspend in their £50m agreement for Amadou Onana.

However, regardless of anyone’s opinion on Villa’s transfer dealings under Monchi, they simply cannot afford to lose him midway through a summer window.

If he were to depart, the B6 outfit would be forced to restructure their recruitment department, and that would surely provide a severe disruption to their transfer plans.

Monchi leaving would result in different ideas coming in behind the scenes, which could drastically alter Villa’s intentions in the market.

For all the players that Villa have been linked with so far, if they could keep hold of their Spanish chief, it might be the best piece of business they do all summer.
