Aston Villa points deduction update revealed as ‘huge’ PSR worries grow

Aston Villa could face punishment from UEFA this summer as their financial concerns grow.

Unai Emery’s side have been struggling with financial restrictions for a number of years.

Villa had to sell stars such as Douglas Luiz last summer to meet PSR requirements.

Going into this transfer window, Emery may have to sell more players due to PSR concerns.

Now, Aston Villa are believed to have breached UEFA financial restrictions after their recent adventures in Europe.

Villa ‘unlikely’ to face points deduction for UEFA breach

Aston Villa’s recent rise under Emery has caused them to be under UEFA financial restrictions as well as PSR.

The Birmingham outfit have competed in the Europa Conference League and the Champions League in the last two seasons.

Now, given their recent breach of UEFA’s rules, there are concerns about what punishment they could face.

UEFA could do anything from fine Villa to give the Birmingham outfit a points deduction which would no doubt damage their upcoming campaign.

Now, Reach PLC’s Business Of Football writer Dave Powell has told the Claret and Blue Podcast (4 June), the odds of a points deduction.

He said: “There is no reason I can think of where Villa would take a point deduction. The problem is there’s that cluster of clubs where it’s very, very close, so a point makes a huge difference.

“Can you imagine if Nottingham Forest points deduction would have been, for this kind of financial year, how close those things were? I don’t think they’re willingly taking any points deductions there.”

Villa need to concentrate on Europa League victory next season

After Villa missed out on the Champions League, the club will be competing in the Europa League for the 2025/26 campaign.

Emery’s side are likely to be one of the favourites to win the competition after their recent surge up the Premier League table.

This is especially true given that Manchester United and Tottenham both reached the final this season despite their poor form, with the London club lifting the trophy.

With Champions League football on offer for the winner, winning the trophy could be an easier route to Europe’s most prestigious competition.

Villa need Champions League football to help with their financial woes, and the Europa League could be the best way to achieve this.
