Monchi reacts as Aston Villa reach agreement for defender deal

Aston Villa will be keen on building a squad ready for another season of Premier League and European action.

The Villans could only secure a sixth-place finish and a place in the Europa League after a highly congested and busy campaign.

This looks set to spark a busy window for Unai Emery and Co. as the B6 club look to return to the Champions League once again.

As a result, managing the squad at Villa Park will be of high importance, with the summer kicking off with a fresh announcement from the Midlands.

Aston Villa announce agreement ahead of transfer window

There is no doubt that a defensive overhaul is needed this summer, after a campaign filled with frustrating opposition goals.

This was far from helpful as Villa racked up a goal difference of just seven, ultimately losing out on a top-five finish to Newcastle United by 14 goals.

As a result, it is little surprise that defensive options like Alessio Romagnoli have been linked with a move to link up with Emery, ready for the new season.

To this point, the Villans are yet to complete a signing, but have handed themselves a boost at the back with the contract extension of Tyrone Mings.

The 32-year-old has played a key role at Villa Park since 2019 and will continue to do so after agreeing to a new deal, having made 22 appearances in all competitions last campaign.

Speaking to the official Aston Villa website (4 June), President of Football Operations, Monchi, revealed his delight in having secured the future of the England international.

He said: “We are very happy that Tyrone has extended his contract with Aston Villa. We are delighted that he will continue to be a part of our journey.”

Tying down the services of the stalwart defender can only be seen as a positive as Emery looks for yet another positive season.

Although the likes of Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa may take the headlines, the ex-Bournemouth man’s leadership certainly plays a telling role on performances in B6.

This is especially positive alongside lesser Premier League-experienced options like Ian Maatsen, who benefit from constant chatter from the Englishman.

It appears that Villa are prepared for the upcoming window, as turbulent as it may prove to be, starting in the best possible fashion with Mings.
