Aston Villa have a decision to make on the future of Tyrone Mings.

Unai Emery’s side will be unable to offer UEFA Champions League football next year after a controversial 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on the final day of the Premier League season (25 May).

As a result, the futures of several high-profile players are uncertain, such as Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Martínez.

Meanwhile, Mings’ future is also up in the air as the centre-back prepares to enter the final year of his contract in the West Midlands.

Aston Villa ‘to offer Mings a one-year contract extension’

Mings has endured a torrid time with injuries over the last couple of seasons, spending more than a year on the sidelines with an ACL injury before returning last October.

However, the 32-year-old still managed to make 22 appearances in all competitions this season.

According to John Percy via The Telegraph (22 May), Mings is expected to hold talks with Villa’s hierarchy about a contract extension.

However, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes a short-term deal will be offered due to the defender’s injury record.

“I’d imagine Mings will be offered a one-year extension,” King said.

“He’s had quite a few injuries, so there is always that fear. I’d imagine Aston Villa will be looking to sign another centre-back this summer. Mings’ position depends on whether he can stay fit.

“However, he has been an important part of the squad. Therefore, I’d see no reason why Villa wouldn’t want him to stay, unless there are fears over his fitness.”

Plenty of Villa supporters will be concerned about the futures of some of their big-name stars.

However, it is also important to keep players such as Mings around as Emery will need experienced heads in the dressing room next season. Therefore, a short-term deal makes sense.
