Jason Cundy calls out Aston Villa fans as he hits back at Unai Emery complaints

Aston Villa missed out on Champions League football after their 2-0 defeat against Manchester United on the final day of the Premier League season.

It was a controversial game, with Villa going down to 10 men just before half-time after Emi Martinez received a straight red card for a challenge on Rasmus Hojlund.

Aston Villa also scored through Morgan Rogers in the second half, but Thomas Bramall had already blown his whistle after wrongly judging Altay Bayindir had the ball in his hands.

As a result, the Villans finished sitting sixth in the Premier League, having to settle for a place in the Europa League next season.

Jason Cundy offers Unai Emery verdict

Although Villa finished the season on a disappointing note, Unai Emery has done an excellent job in the West Midlands.

There is naturally a disappointment not to gain another season of Champions League football, but the Europa League will still help when it comes to recruiting players in the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa ended the season missing out on goal difference.

Furthermore, looking at Manchester United and Tottenham getting to the final of the competition this term surely has to provide motivation that a trophy is achievable.

Although there are positives that can be taken, Emery and his men will undoubtedly feel hard done by when it comes to some of the decisions in the game which changed things.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (25 May, 18:55), Jason Cundy took a dig at Emery, though, as he said: “It’s Villa’s fault.

“Don’t blame the referee on your season. Everyone’s telling me they’ve got the greatest manager in the world, done this, done that. Sixth, alright.”

Jamie O’Hara was quick to defend the West Midlands outfit as he replied: “That’s harsh.”

Nevertheless, Cundy continued to say: “No. Unai Emery the greatest manager Villa have ever had, sixth.

“You’ve had 38 games to get this sorted. Don’t be blaming the referee. You look at your own business, look at what you’ve done over those 38 games, take care of your own business, everyone feels a harsh decision throughout the season.

“Don’t be phoning me up, Villa fans, moaning that the reason you’ve missed out on x amount of millions of pounds is because of the referee. The reason you missed out is because you ain’t good enough.”

Emery to push Aston Villa again next season

It’s a disappointing end to the season for Aston Villa, especially in the way the game unfolded, and there will be a feeling of disappointment in the West Midlands for now.

However, once that initial feeling has worn off, supporters can be proud of Emery and the work he has done with the squad this term.

You can understand the point that Cundy is trying to make in the sense that if Villa had done more earlier in the season, they would have been in a safe position on the final day of the campaign.

However, the attack on Emery’s quality and the praise he has received are massively unfair, especially when his side has coped with the increase in games well, despite having a smaller squad than their counterparts.

The boss will no doubt be eager to work on the make-up of the team over the summer, hoping to push even further next term.

Cundy is gloating for now, but with that added pressure now on his beloved Chelsea next season, let’s see how he reacts if it all comes crumbling down again at Stamford Bridge.
