Aston Villa raid Juventus for Calvo as new appointment ready

Aston Villa are set for another staff reshuffle as they prepare to welcome Francesco Calvo.

Nassef Sawiris has identified Calvo as key to the club’s future now that they are guaranteed European football once more next season.

It remains to be seen whether Unai Emery can guide them to the Champions League, with the club currently only behind Chelsea on goal difference with two games left to play.

The club will be under no illusions as to how important finishing in the top five would be for Villa’s precarious financial situation and summer planning, yet they have already made crucial arrangements.

Juventus acquisition statement move

Juventus have had plenty of dealings with Villa of late, with former claret and blue Douglas Luiz recently speaking about his admiration for the Midlands club since his move to Turin.

They have once again returned to Italy, this time in less friendly circumstances.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio (13 May), they are in line to hire Calvo as their new CEO, with the Italian formally submitting his resignation to accept the new role.

With the Bianconeri still battling to finish top four in Serie A, the decision has raised a few eyebrows but will nonetheless be seen as a coup for the Lions who were able to offer him a higher-profile role.

He will replace the outgoing Chris Heck, whose departure was officially announced on the club’s website on April 30.

Emery still the main man

Villa’s changes at boardroom level could affect many aspects of the enterprise, other than the importance of Emery, who remains the key component in their project.

The Spanish manager has become the face of the club and is credited with guiding them to new heights since his arrival in 2022.

Emery’s League Record at Aston Villa

The club’s stature has grown exponentially, all whilst playing a robust and exciting brand of football in Emery’s vision

Under his tutelage, they not only qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the Premier League era, but reached the quarter-finals before they were knocked out by his former side, PSG.

His achievements, along with his vast experience, man-management and tactical acumen, have solidified him as the most important figure at the club irrespective of who comes in.
