Exclusive: Aston Villa sanction blockbuster sale after private ‘PSR tip-off’
Aston Villa are one of several clubs that could be impacted by the Premier League’s latest PSR twist.
Villa have run into difficulty with the current PSR rules over the past few seasons.
Therefore, the mega-money sale of Jhon Duran would have provided a much-needed financial boost during the winter transfer window, especially with the club bringing in several high-profile players of their own.
Villa’s decision to sell Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town was thought to be driven by PSR concerns. Therefore, Unai Emery’s side will no doubt be frustrated by the latest PSR twist.
Jhon Duran sales provides financial boost at Aston Villa
As reported by The Standard (13 February), the Premier League’s current profit and sustainability rules, which permit clubs to lose a maximum of £105million over three seasons, are set to remain in place next season in an unexpected twist.
These PSR rules, which were previously criticised by Aston Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris, were originally planned to be replaced this summer. However, those plans have been delayed, which could spell trouble for Villa.
Therefore, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – thinks Duran’s sale might have been sanctioned due to the news that the PSR rules were set to remain in place, which the Villans might have received advanced warning about.
“I would say that somebody gave Villa a tip,” King said.
“They gave them a tip that this PSR system could be in place for another year. Duran’s sale would certainly have changed the books at Villa, it was a big boost.
“It doesn’t seem as though losing Duran has deterred the club too much, they’re still picking up results and they’re still in plenty of competitions.”
Aston Villa move on from Jhon Duran
Duran is clearly a talented young player. However, it doesn’t seem as though Villa were too bothered to let him go, selling him just a matter of months after he had signed a new contract.
Emery always appeared to prefer Ollie Watkins, and it looks as though that proved to be true.

Therefore, the club will just be thankful that Duran was able to provide such a boost to their finances, especially if they need to avoid large-scale losses ahead of next season.
