Aston Villa v Celtic controversy: UEFA release statement as punishment served

Celtic have learned the extent of their punishment from UEFA after what happened in the stands against Aston Villa.

There was so much going on at Villa Park in the Champions League, both on and off the pitch.

A Morgan Rogers brace put the Villans two up with just five minutes gone before Adam Idah levelled the clash with two goals in two minutes before halftime.

Eventually the England international secured the win with his hattrick goal after Ollie Watkins had made it 3-2.

Unfortunately, the actions of certain sections of the away fan base caught the attention on the night, for all the wrong reasons and now UEFA has responded.

There were plenty of moments in B6 which were cause for concern and arguably could have been picked up by the Champions League’s organisers.

From away fans sitting in the home end and causing fights with Villa supporters, to throwing flares onto the pitch with the score at 2-1.

It is the latter that UEFA have picked up on in their statement, charging the Hoops for the lighting of fireworks and the throwing of objects.

This has landed the Scottish Premiership champions a fine of £8.3k which has been deemed as a sufficient punishment.

As a result, their fans will be allowed to purchase tickets and travel to the Allianz Stadium for the playoff clash against Bayern Munich on 18 February.

It was the fights in the Villa Park stands that many supporters deemed as unacceptable from either set of fans on the night in B6.

There were various brawls breaking out on the terraces, particularly in the Doug Ellis Stand, which required police intervention.

Arguably, the actions of certain supporters and the lack of proper security measures from the Villans could have landed the home side a fine themselves.

Unai Emery and Co. will be glad to learn that nothing has gone against them and instead, they can look ahead to the round of 16 with no fear of issues from UEFA.
