Aston Villa player ratings v Wolves: Garcia stinks on debut, Digne gets 3/10

Aston Villa fell to yet another defeat after a Champions League match as they lost 2-0 to Wolves on Saturday.

An early strike from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde put Wolves ahead after 12 minutes and Matheus Cunha added a late second on a frustrating day for the Villans.

It could be argued Donyell Malen should have had a first Villa goal and an equaliser, but his strike was bizarrely ruled out due to Morgan Rogers standing in an offside position.

Here, Villa News rates the performances of Unai Emery’s side after their defeat in the local derby

Emi Martinez – 4

Martinez conceded yet again from the first shot on target he faced despite making three saves. This is a trend that just can not continue.

Andres Garcia – 4

It wasn’t an easy debut for the Spaniard who was chucked in at the deep end as he failed to win a tackle while winning just 33 per cent of duels. Off the pace.

Ezri Konsa – 4

Konsa was about the Villans’ best player on the day – not that that was difficult – and was fouled on four separate occasions. He got embarrassed by Matheus Cunha for the second goal, there is no doubt about that.

Boubacar Kamara – 4

Given how good the 25-year-old has been in recent weeks, he was so poor for the Wolves goal and didn’t truly recover. Winning just 33 per cent of attempted tackles as a centre-back just isn’t good enough.

Lucas Digne – 3

A poor day at the office for the left-back who was deservedly hooked at half time. With a 0 per cent success rate in both crosses and long balls, the 31-year-old was so far from his usual best.

Lamare Bogarde – 5

The 21-year-old was a positive point for Emery to take as he looked useful in the midfield and at right-back in what was a poor performance elsewhere.

Youri Tielemans – 4

His effort with just minutes to go summed up his performance and Villa on the night. Poor.

John McGinn – 4

The captain came back into the starting XI and had little impact. He had just two touches in the Wolves box while failing to create any sort of chance despite playing in an advanced role.

Morgan Rogers – 4

After the high of a Champions League hat-trick, Rogers has come crashing back down to Earth. With a zero per cent dribble success rate while losing seven duels, it was not his night.

Jacob Ramsey – 4

Ramsey looked so, so good in the early stages then just fell away and was deservedly taken off at half time. With two failed dribble attempts and four lost duels, it was not his day.

Ollie Watkins – 4

Just as Jhon Duran departs, Ollie Watkins picks up an injury which is just typical. With that being said, he had offered little in the opening 45 minutes.

Substitutes

Ian Maatsen – 3

Amadou Onana – 4

Donyell Malen – 4

Leon Bailey – 3
