Emery faces Aston Villa ‘danger’ after David Ornstein mega-money update
Aston Villa must ensure they maintain an appropriate level of quality in depth across the squad to compete this season, according to Ian Darke.
The TV commentator, speaking exclusively to Villa News, has admitted a “danger” for Unai Emery could arise should he and the Villans sanction the sale of too many high-profile players before the transfer deadline.
Jhon Duran is set to depart for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League in a deal worth over £64million plus add-ons (David Ornstein, 29 January), and Darke has emphasised how keeping strength in depth is vital to an exciting progression in the Champions League, FA Cup and a top-five finish in the Premier League.
“They’ve got to keep all the plates spinning – the league, the FA Cup and the Champions League,” he said.
“It looks quite an open year in Europe so if they’re in their best form, they could make a surprisingly deep run.
“If they lose too many players then there is that danger for Unai Emery, who will no doubt be considering the size of the squad he has to maintain.”
Aston Villa transfer business could take a turn
Aston Villa have so far made two signings during the winter window, with Andres Garcia coming in as Diego Carlos departed, and Donyell Malen replaced Jaden Philogene for a similar fee.
A succession of loans have also taken place, with Emi Buendia the latest as he heads for Bayer Leverkusen following the agreement of a contract extension.

Emery’s men remain fighting on three fronts, and should they keep enough depth in the squad have every chance of exciting runs in the cup competitions and a repeated successful league campaign.
