Arsenal ‘conspiracy theory’ v Aston Villa: Ex-PGMOL chief speaks out
Keith Hackett has rubbished the idea there’s a conspiracy theory against Arsenal after they had a late goal ruled out versus Aston Villa on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s side blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with the Villans and drop two vital points in the Premier League title race.
However, many Gunners fans believe they should have had a third goal late on when Mikel Merino’s powerful shot was deflected into the net off Kai Havertz.
Arsenal players and fans thought he well-placed German won them the game. However, VAR quickly ruled it out as replays clearly showed the ball striking the ex-Chelsea player’s arm before going into the net.
Hackett doesn’t believe the law can be any clearer about goals being scored by players’ hands or arms.
Even though it was accidental contact by Havertz, that simply doesn’t matter and VAR was correct to rule out the deflected goal.
“The conspiracy theory is been raised on social media with regard to the disallowed Arsenal goal,” Hackett told Villa News.

“The law is clear. It is an offence to score in the opponents’ goal directly from their hand or arm, even if accidental, or immediately after the ball has touched their hand or arm, even if accidental.
“The ball struck the arm of the Arsenal player.
“The referee applied the law correctly to disallow the goal.”
Arsenal conspiracy theorists out in force after Aston Villa draw
It seems Arsenal fans will do anything they can to take the blame off their side after squandering a two-goal lead over Villa.
They missed a number of chances, do not have a proper goalscorer up front, have several players injured and switched off at the back twice to allow Villa to score.
But, sure, there’s a conspiracy at the PGMOL or the Premier League that, for some reason, they don’t want the Gunners to win the Premier League.
