FA told to ‘ban Duran for longer’ as Aston Villa crunch talks mooted
Jhon Duran should have been hit with an extended ban for aggressively kicking a water bottle after being sent off for Aston Villa against Newcastle United, Keith Hackett has said.
The Colombia striker was shown a straight red after he was deemed to have stamped on Fabian Schar as Villa fell to a 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park on December 26.
In his anger at being sent off, Duran was seen reacting animatedly on the touchlines and kicking a water bottle, which resulted in an FA charge.
It was confirmed on Friday that the FA had imposed a £15,000 fine on the 21-year-old but in the organisation said in its written reasons they did not deem there was enough for a sporting sanction.
Ex-PGMOL chief Hackett slammed this decision and said that boss Unai Emery should now have crunch talks with his striker in order to curb his temper in future.
Speaking to Villa News, Hackett said: “The FA should have increased his suspension from the game.
“£15,000 is not a lot against the player’s earnings.
“His manager needs to have a word to encourage him to focus on playing in a less aggressive and more controlled manner.”
Aston Villa ace Jhon Duran punished by FA
At the time, there was quite a lot of debate as to whether Duran was rightfully sent off and the evidence is pretty inconclusive as to whether he actually meant to stamp on Schar.
What was more damning was his angry reaction to the dismissal and really no matter how frustrated he was he has to do more to keep his emotions in check.

Villa are perhaps fortunate that he has avoided a more serious sanction than a fine and most would have expected some sort of ban in truth.
But, the matter is dealt with now and it’s fine for Emery, Duran and everyone at the club to just put it down to a learning curve and move on.
