Diego Carlos should be axed for Aston Villa after what he did v Brighton

Diego Carlos should face the axe from Unai Emery after what he did for Aston Villa against Brighton on Monday.

The Villans could only manage a point at Villa Park on 30 December despite an opener from Ollie Watkins and a second-half Morgan Rogers strike.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side got back into the game and made Villa pay for their defensive frailties on the night which ultimately cost them taking all three points.

Looking ahead to a clash against Leicester City on Saturday (4 January), Emery could look to make a change in hope of keeping a clean sheet.

The Brazilian came back into the starting XI for the visit of the Seagulls but could be set to return to the bench already after an up-and-down display.

The 31-year-old has many qualities which make him a useful asset for the Villans but can be erratic and do things which frustrate the Villa faithful.

This is proven by his seven attempted long balls in B6 on Monday with just 43 per cent of them being successful which won’t impress Emery [FotMob].

This wasn’t backed up by a positive defensive showing as the former Sevilla man failed to complete a tackle, in a zero per cent win rate, while also not contributing a single interception.

As well as that, the centre-back lost four duels which is disappointing given his physicality compared to the Brighton forwards.

Given that Ezri Konsa won nine duels and completed two tackles against the Seagulls, it would make sense to start him in his recognised centre-back role ahead of the Brazilian.
