Daniel Sturridge wowed by Aston Villa star v Manchester City, he is now number one

Jhon Duran has surely secured his status as the number-one striker at Aston Villa after he wowed Daniel Sturridge in the win over Manchester City.

Ollie Watkins was only fit enough to start from the bench on 21 December so the Colombian was given the nod as the Villans beat Pep Guardiola’s side 2-1.

Sturridge took to X to praise the Villa man after he scored the opener, saying: “Jhon Duran again.

“He’s a top finisher and a constant threat. I love watching him develop. 21 years young.”

Duran is becoming one of the most clinical attackers in Europe, with 12 goals in all competitions in 944 minutes, a ratio of a goal every 73 minutes, and he looks to have overtaken Watkins in the pecking order.

Duran makes the most of another Aston Villa start

The Colombian forward has been forced to settle for appearances from the bench so far this campaign.

He has started just six matches in all competitions but has made a name for himself as a super-sub with his goals from the bench.

The 21-year-old was handed his third league start of the season against City and scored one goal, recorded a 100 per cent shot accuracy from three attempts and had five touches in the opposition box. [Fotmob]

He also contributed defensively, making five recoveries, two clearances and one tackle while winning two of the three ground duels he contested for a 67 per cent success rate.

Surely Emery cannot ignore his red-hot form for much longer, otherwise, he will likely seek a transfer away from the Midlands.

He has surely staked his claim to be the Villans starting number nine with his performance against the defending champions and the baton is now over to Watkins to hit back.
