Gabby Agbonlahor rages at Nottingham Forest v Aston Villa controversy

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Aston Villa should have been awarded a penalty in their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Villans wanted a penalty after Elliot Anderson appeared to drag down Morgan Rogers inside the box in the opening 45 minutes on 14 December, although the referee and VAR did not agree.

Agbonlahor could not believe it and stressed the need for former players to be in control of VAR as Unai Emery’s side endured a frustrating evening.

“How’s that not a penalty? VAR against Villa once again. Blatant pen. Like I say, get ex-players on VAR,” the former Villa captain wrote on X (14 December).

Unai Emery will be disappointed to have come away from the City Ground empty-handed after taking the lead through Jhon Duran just after the hour mark.

Chris Wood thought he had equalised for the hosts, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a long VAR check, to Villa’s relief.

However, Nikola Milenkovic headed home from close range minutes later despite Emi Martinez getting both hands on it.

It appeared the spoils would be shared until Anthony Elanga delivered a crushing blow to the Birmingham-based club three minutes into injury time.

With Forest coming from behind to claim all three points, one can only wonder if things would have been different if Aston Villa were handed a clear penalty for the first-half challenge on Rogers.

Nevertheless, Emery’s hopes of taking his winning streak across all competitions to four games came to an end in Nottingham.

They will look to return to winning ways when they host Manchester City at Villa Park in the league next Saturday (21 December).
