Aston Villa smokescreen emerges to hide ‘more exciting’ signing by Monchi

Bryan King has speculated that Aston Villa-linked midfielder Romano Schmid could be a smokescreen for a “more exciting transfer”.

The ex-Villa scout isn’t convinced that the Werder Bremen star is what Unai Emery’s side need right now.

As reported by Florian Plettenberg [25 November], Villa have made “concrete enquiries” over a move for Schmid, who could be available for £8million.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has speculated that something else might be going on in the background.

“I would have thought Villa would be looking for someone a step up from Schmid,” King said.

“He’s a good player. However, is he the player to take Villa to the next level? I don’t think so. If Villa are bringing somebody in, that somebody has to be a top-quality midfielder.

“It seems as though they’re suffering from injuries in that area of the pitch. However, it is one thing to look at a player and it is another thing to buy that player. Maybe Schmid is a second-choice option, and they have a more exciting transfer lined up in the background?”

Aston Villa using Romano Schmid reports as transfer smokescreen?

Villa could be using the noise around Schmid to distract from a bigger move in January.

While the 24-year-old would be an interesting addition to Emery’s squad, he isn’t necessarily a signing that would get supporters on their feet.

It has been speculated that Monchi might already be lining up a £54million move for Álex Baena [via CaughtOffside, 29 October], which would be a much more exciting addition to Emery’s squad.

However, whatever player the club end up going for, it is important that some reinforcements are brought in this January considering the issues Villa have faced as of late.
