Aston Villa can pay more as Jonathan David demands £25m contract for transfer

Aston Villa would likely be happy to pay Jonathan David more in wages if he signs on a free transfer, Dan Plumley has said.

It has been reported that the Villans are interested in the Lille striker, who could demand up to £25million in his next contract as his current deal ends at the end of this season [Tuttosport].

Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted with UEFA’s new regulations that include all aspects of transfer costs, you could be better off this way.

“We have seen this in the past,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“We are seeing it more and more in the days of PSR and financial regulations, which again is an interesting sub-plot to all of this.

We have to look at that transfer cost as a total cost, and this is what UEFA are now doing with their new set of regulations, it covers transfer free, the amortisation of the player contract, it covers wages and agent fees, so it’s a catch-all mechanism.

When you put all of those things together, if you can save on the transfer fee then you may feel like you can uplift the wage bill and the overall contract because the net gain, you’re still better off.

Those are the metrics that go towards UEFA’s reporting system and we expect the Premier League and the EFL potentially to follow suit in the future, so it’s absolutely good business sense for some clubs to pay a little bit more over the course of a contract and spread it across that rather than having that fee upfront.

If you don’t have the fee, that gives you a little more leeway to work with.”

The last thing Unai Emery really needs right now is another striker.
