Aston Villa in ‘catch-22’ situation as contract talks hit the skids – Sky Sports journalist
Dan Bardell has compared Carney Chukwuemeka to Rory Wilson’s contract situation after Aston Villa forced him to train alone.
The Villans are keen to sign the Scotland Under-21s international down to a new contract but Villa News have been told that he is yet to have been offered any first-team assurances as part of negotiations.
As a result, the 18-year-old is unlikely to sign a deal, similarly to Chukwuemeka who joined Chelsea in 2022 for £20million [BBC Sport] after refusing to put pen to paper at Villa Park.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist has made a direct comparison between the two and believes both parties are in a catch-22 situation as the contract conversation continues.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “It feels like a similar situation to Carney Chukwuemeka.
“He wanted playing time and the club wanted him to sign a new deal before giving those assurances.
“It isn’t doing anyone any favours, players want to know their pathway but the club wants to know they are committed.
“Everyone is caught up in this catch-22 situation and it does feel familiar to that of a few years ago.“
Rory Wilson Aston Villa situation compared to Carney Chukwuemeka
The now 21-year-old was arguably the brightest prospect for the Villans before leaving which saw him make 16 first team appearances in two seasons.
Despite this, the midfielder made the decision to reject a deal from Villa in favour of a move to Stamford Bridge which hasn’t worked out, failing to make a Premier League appearance so far this season.
Wilson won’t want his career to take a similar path but without a conversation over a first-team future with Unai Emery and Monchi, it feels like a move away will be likely.

This would be a blow to Villa given how positive the striker has been for the academy side, shown as he scored in the UEFA Youth League clash against Young Boys earlier in the season.
In other Aston Villa news, a deal to sell one fan favourite could go through if Premier League rivals match his hefty price tag.
