Unai Emery must snub Jhon Duran start for Aston Villa v Wycombe after what Alan Shearer said

Unai Emery must keep faith in Ollie Watkins against Wycombe Wanderers and continue to utilise Jhon Duran as an Aston Villa impact substitute.

The Villans are preparing for their third game in seven days as they travel to Adams Park to face the League One side in the EFL Cup.

This could pose an opportunity for the Spaniard to make plenty of changes to his side with a clash against Ipswich Town coming up on Sunday 29 September.

With that being said, leaving Duran on the bench against the Chairboys could prove to be a smart move from Emery.

There is no doubt that the Colombia international has been a changed player so far this campaign with his impact clear to see in B6.

This has seen the 20-year-old score four goals off the bench in the Premier League, with a 2.75 goals per 90 ratio which is the highest in the division [FotMob].

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast on 23 September, Alan Shearer called the striker a “super sub”.

That is exactly what he is and maybe looking ahead to a clash against a League One side, Emery should keep him as that bench option.

His performance against Wolves was positive once again as he maintained a 100 pass accuracy across his 15 touches with two of those coming in the opposition penalty area [FotMob].

The forward showed a different way of scoring with his two attempted shots as he tapped home a Morgan Rogers cross from in between the goalposts.

This wasn’t everything to his game as Duran was defensively resolute, winning one tackle and three duels while being fouled twice.

His impact was excellent once again but, for any reason, if things don’t go right against Wycombe, having him come on could be a better option than him starting.

This could see Emery keep Watkins in that number nine role while potentially making a whole host of changes around the England international.
