Jacob Ramsey undroppable for Aston Villa after what he did in Champions League
Jacob Ramsey showed Unai Emery exactly what he can do with a man-of-the-match performance for Aston Villa against Young Boys in the Champions League.
Ramsey netted the second goal in the dominant 3-0 victory over the Swiss side, making the left-hand side his own and developing a solid partnership with fellow scorer Youri Tielemans.
Doubts had emerged before kick-off as Ramsey was given only his second start in all competitions so far this season, but the 23-year-old more than repaid Emery’s faith with a flawless performance.

With Villa in cruise control for much of their opening Champions League match in Bern, Ramsey proved unplayable for a defence that simply had no match for Emery’s side.
Doubling Villa’s lead in the 38th minute, Ramsey racked up 0.75 xG throughout the game, with all three of his attempted shots on goal being on target for 1.19 expected goals-on-target [FotMob].
Ramsey was also on song in a creative sense, too, completing 95 per cent of his 43 attempted passes and creating three chances for his teammates, generating 0.26 xA in the process [SofaScore].
The 23-year-old was involved throughout, having 57 touches and winning four of his five duels on the ground, winning three free-kicks despite also losing possession on five occasions.
Regardless, Ramsey was still keen to burst forward at any and every opportunity, completing two passes into the final third and having five touches in the Young Boys box, including one for his close-range goal [FotMob].
With an additional four defensive recoveries, Ramsey has staked his claim to become a regular in Emery’s side, and having made his first league start against Everton on 14 September, the midfielder’s spot is surely now his to lose.
