Aston Villa in running to sign Lille striker Jonathan David in 2025, free transfer on the cards

Lille striker Jonathan David could be set for a move to Aston Villa in June 2025, according to FC Inter News.

The Italian news outlet reported on 10 September that David has been on the radar of many big clubs for some time now, with Villa facing competition from Champions League counterparts Inter Milan.

It is understood that Aston Villa did show an interest in the 24-year-old Canada international in the summer transfer window but decided to not follow up on that pursuit.

David’s contract at Lille expires next year, meaning he could be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2025.

Would Jonathan David choose Aston Villa next summer?

Champions League football returns to Villa Park for the first time in over 40 years, and success will be key if they are to bolster their squad next summer.

Chances for potential world-class strikers don’t come often, and David could be the addition that turns the Midlands club into a trophy-winning team.

The Lille forward has scored over 13 goals in Ligue 1 for four consecutive seasons, scoring 71 goals in that time, which is 12 more than current Villa frontman Ollie Watkins.

Although the standard of the Premier League is much more competitive than the French first division, David is primed and ready for a challenge at a big club, with Champions League football his aim.

Back-up striker Jhon Duran almost left Villa to join fellow claret and blue side West Ham in the summer, and if he desires a starting place in the Premier League and moves away, then David could be tempted by a move, however, the Villains will need to continue their top four form if they are to lure him to England.
