Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers blasted as medical development emerges
Bryan King has blasted Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers amid a transfer exit update.
The ex-Villa scout claims he never thought the 29-year-old was good enough for the club.
It comes as Birmingham World journalist Charlie Haffenden has reported via X (11 July) that Chambers has a medical scheduled with Championship outfit Cardiff City.
And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – claims this is a positive update for Unai Emery’s side.
“I’ve never been a fan of Chambers, even when he was at Arsenal,” King said.
“I was amazed when he joined Villa and I think this is a good move for the club to get rid of him. They should have looked to move him on last summer.
“He is never going to be a top choice for Emery, who obviously doesn’t fancy him. This was a player who arrived from Arsenal for decent money, and he has never lived up to his price tag.
“Therefore, it is a relief to see that he is being moved on. We will see how he does in the Championship because it doesn’t get any easier down there.”
Calum Chambers set to leave Aston Villa and join Cardiff City in the Championship
This is a big step down for Chambers but is perhaps reflective of how the defender has fallen out of favour at Villa Park.
Based on his performances in recent years it is hard to make an argument for the ex-Arsenal man being a UEFA Champions League quality player.
As a result, it is probably best that he is moved on permanently, and with just two years left on his Villa deal, this is a good time for the club to part ways with him.
Emery will therefore hopefully be able to use the freed-up funds to reinvest in players of a higher level.
In other Aston Villa news, another player has agreed terms to quit the club amid a “perfect” transfer update.
