Tyrone Mings may struggle to reclaim Aston Villa spot after new developments

Tyrone Mings could struggle to return to the Aston Villa starting XI next season after nearly 12 months out injured.

The Englishman suffered an ACL injury against Newcastle United on the opening day of the Premier League season last year.

The central defender missed the rest of the campaign for the Villans having played a regular role throughout pre-season.

Despite his importance at Villa Park over the years, the 31-year-old could struggle to get back into the starting XI next season under Unai Emery.

Tyrone Mings to struggle to make Aston Villa starting XI return

Mings has consistently performed positively for the Villans ever since his initial loan spell from Bournemouth in the Championship.

On this day in 2019 (8 July), the defender’s permanent signing was confirmed after promotion via the play-off final against Derby County.

It was highly frustrating for him to suffer such a serious injury but Villa brushed themselves off and did well to achieve Champions League qualification.

Pau Torres stepped into Mings’ left-centre-back role and performed at a top level. In his final appearance of the Premier League season, the Spaniard showed why he is so highly rated.

Against Liverpool, despite conceding three, the 27-year-old kept a 92 per cent pass accuracy while making two passes into the final third [FotMob].

The Spaniard also won 100 per cent of his tackles and aerial duels while making four clearances and one block throughout.

Alongside him was Diego Carlos who also kept up a positive pass accuracy of 93 per cent while being involved in eight defensive actions [FotMob].

Aston Villa Carlos

It is hard to know what level Mings will come back at. His last full Villa appearance came in May last season against Brighton.

The Englishman won just 50 per cent of his duels and did maintain a 74 per cent pass accuracy [SofaScore] which is significantly less than Torres and Carlos.

Mings could struggle to get back into the starting XI next season with Emery handed a selection headache for the opening clash against West Ham United.
