Aston Villa set to announce three transfers after Enzo Barrenechea medical
Enzo Barrenechea has completed his medical at Aston Villa as the club prepares to announce three new transfers, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist posted on X that the Juventus midfielder has passed his medical tests at Villa Park, with an announcement of his signing seemingly imminent.
Romano added that Samuel Iling-Junior is also on the verge of being announced as a new Villa player, as is Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen [Fabrizio Romano, 24 June].
Douglas Luiz, currently on Copa America duty with Brazil, is expected to head in the opposite direction to Barrenechea and Iling-Junior, with the duo included as part of the Italian side’s bid to sign the midfielder.
Aston Villa transfers bulk up squad for Champions League run
Villa are wasting no time in the bulking out of their squad so far this summer, with Barrenechea, Iling-Junior and Maatsen set to be the third, fourth and fifth new faces through the doors already.
Lewis Dobbin has already been signed, with these other signings showing that Villa mean business as they prepare for a season fighting at the top.
A first-ever UEFA Champions League campaign following the club’s fourth-placed finish last season has necessitated an uptick in both quantity and quality, and the three imminent signings should bring both.
Losing midfield lynchpin and chief penalty taker Luiz to Juventus is a blow for Unai Emery’s side, but including Barrenechea and Iling-Junior as part of the transfer could be a shrewd move in the long run [Fabrizio Romano, 27 June].
Adding depth and quality in defensive midfield, out wide and at left-back will certainly help Villa’s growing squad to challenge on several fronts, and regardless of how well Barrenechea settles, there may still be money left over for further reinforcements to plug the gap left by Luiz.
In other Aston Villa news, Unai Emery wants to add further depth to his squad with a summer move for Matteo Guenoduzi mooted.
