Aston Villa handed ‘wonderful boost’ as Ian Maatsen undergoes medical

Bryan King believes the addition of Ian Maatsen will be a “wonderful boost” for Aston Villa.

The ex-Villa scout claims the defender’s experience in Europe will prove useful for Unai Emery.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (23 June), Maatsen was granted permission by Chelsea to conduct his Aston Villa medical at the Netherlands camp in Germany, which he is said to have passed.

A deal has been agreed between the two clubs worth £37.5million, with personal terms almost agreed for Maatensen to join Lewis Dobbin in signing for the Villans.

And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – sees this as a positive bit of transfer business for the club.

“He has been playing in a good league while on loan with Borussia Dortmund and played in a UEFA Champions League final,” King said.

“Bringing in any player with that type of experience is a wonderful boost for Emery.

“Especially as Villa are going to be competing in the Champions League themselves next season. They will need players with that kind of experience.”

Ian Maatsen set to join Aston Villa from Chelsea for £37.5million

This is a positive bit of business for Villa.

Although Maatsen has never made much of an impact with Chelsea, he stood out during his time in the Bundesliga with Dortmund.

He has therefore proven that he has what it takes to play at the highest level, and at the age of 22, there is still plenty of time for him to improve.

It represents a much-needed upgrade on one of the weaker areas in Emery’s squad.

And if supporters were going to back any man to improve Maatsen, it would have to be the Spaniard.

As a result, £37.5m could soon look like a bargain.
