Aston Villa open talks to sign Brazilian goalkeeper, £10m+ deal wanted
Aston Villa have opened talks with Famalicao over a potential deal for Luiz Junior this summer, according to Bruno Andrade.
The Portuguese journalist reported via his personal X account [15 June] that Villa are interested in signing the Brazilian goalkeeper, with the club awaiting an offer of £8.4million, with £1.7million in add-ons.
While Emiliano Martinez is expected to remain Unai Emery’s first choice keeper next season, Robin Olsen is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Villa Park.
Aston Villa target Luiz Junior as goalkeeper back-up
The Villans currently have multiple shot-stoppers at their disposal, with Martinez and Olsen joined by newly-signed Joe Gauci, who arrived from Adelaide United in January.
Junior could be another talent that Villa acquire, having impressed in Liga Portugal throughout the 2023/24 campaign. He kept eight clean sheets in 33 league starts as Famalicao finished in the top half of the table.
The 23-year-old would certainly be a signing for the future, given the current goalkeeper situation at Villa Park. But with Olsen’s contract running down, it is a smart idea for Villa to start searching for a replacement.
The Swedish veteran was also greeted with mixed reactions, replacing Martinez in between the sticks due to injury, performing poorly in a 4-2 defeat to Olympiacos in the Europa League before pulling off a Man of the Match performance against Brighton in the Premier League.
With Junior showing such promise in Portugal, it is understandable why the Villans have opened talks with the club and are willing to invest £10m if add-ons are earned.
Villa Park could witness a summer of change this season, with Douglas Luiz and Matty Cash already linked with moves away, so fans will be excited to see the club linked with at least one incoming transfer already.
