Weston McKennie ‘really important’ new Aston Villa signing as Fabrizio Romano drops update

Ty Bracey believes the addition of Weston McKennie will be a positive addition to the Aston Villa squad depth next season despite Douglas Luiz leaving for Juventus.

Fabrizio Romano has reported (11 June) that the American will move to Villa Park in a deal which will see the Brazilian join the Old Lady.

The Villans have also moved closer to signing Ross Barkley according to the transfer expert (3 June).

This will see a dramatic change to the midfield conversation next season as Unai Emery prepares his squad for the Champions League.

Villa podcaster Bracey believes McKennie will prove to be a useful addition for squad depth as Luiz departs this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “Obviously people remember McKennie from his time with Leeds when he wasn’t great and they had a poor season but there’s a good player there.

He is a decent player. Fans have to trust Emery and Monchi because whoever they want is going to be good enough for Aston Villa.

Towards the end of last season, the squad got thinner through injury and results fell away at times and with the Champions League, there are only going to be more games.

Although McKennie may not be as good as Luiz, he adds depth and that is going to be really important next season.

Weston McKennie nears Aston Villa move

With the American, alongside Samuel Iling-Junior, the Villans look set to add two Juventus players to their squad ahead of the new season.

With Luiz going one way, the duo are preparing to move the other with a swap deal transfer to Villa Park nearing completion.

McKennie has played in the Premier League but he was relegated as Jesse Marsch, Sam Allardyce and Javi Gracia took charge.

It is safe to say that this uncertainty won’t be the case in B6 with Emery signing a lengthy new contract last month to extend his stay.

He is a physical presence in midfield but the main facet of his game is getting the ball at his feet and driving forward when possible.

The 25-year-old has won two trophies while in Italy so has the experience of winning titles and also of playing in the Champions League.

Fans aren’t particularly impressed by the deal but in an attempt to deal with PSR problems, this may prove to be a shrewd piece of business.

In other Aston Villa news, Unai Emery and Monchi now told how much it will cost to replace Douglas Luiz with Conor Gallagher.
