Unai Emery could re-sign Kieran Tierney as he looks to free up Aston Villa wage bill

Ty Bracey believes Aston Villa should bring in Kieran Tierney if they sell Lucas Digne or Alex Moreno to free up the wage bill in the summer transfer window.

It has been a standout season for the Villans which has seen Unai Emery push them towards Champions League qualification.

There have been many individuals who have been in top form but one position that has constantly rotated is left back.

At times Digne has been preferred while at other points, Moreno has been starting. Injuries have played their role in this indecision.

With the end of the season on the horizon, transfer reports are becoming more regular. This has seen TeamTALK suggest that Emery may move for Tierney over the summer.

The Scot could pose as a replacement for one of Villa’s current left-backs and Bracey believes this could be needed from a financial perspective.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “An upgrade I don’t know. One thing I do know is that we have a huge wage bill for two left-backs. I know Digne’s on a good salary.

“If we can bring in players like Tierney who are capable of what they do for cheaper then I’m all for it. Digne’s a massive chunk of the wage bill so if he’s going to go and we can get someone in on a lesser wage then yes.

“If the club need to get that wage bill down then one in, one out may be needed.”

Should Aston Villa sign Kieran Tierney?

The Villans have struggled to nail down consistent players in the full-back positions this campaign. Both right and left backs have been heavily rotated.

Matty Cash came back into the side against Lille and Bournemouth but Ezri Konsa has also featured in the role throughout the season.

Similarly, Digne and Moreno have both seen game time at intervals. According to FotMob, the Frenchman has featured in 23 Premier League starts while the Spaniard has started 11 times.

It must be said that FFP is a concern that exists amongst all Premier League clubs and could see Villa sell key stars over the summer.

Sell expensive and buy cheaper is likely to be the mantra.

Tierney is currently on loan away from Arsenal in Spain with Real Sociedad after a lack of game time under Mikel Arteta.

This is his first loan spell away from the Emirates but could spell the end of his career in North London.

He has played 16 matches in La Liga with only 11 of those being starts and in that time he has provided two assists [FotMob]. His side are striving toward a Europa or Conference League spot.

Emery tends to opt for a defensive-minded right-back and a left-back who can get forward. This isn’t one of Tierney’s strengths.

He would bring stability to the back line, he has Premier League experience and has worked under Emery before. Villa could bring the best out of the former Celtic star in a potentially positive move.
