Aston Villa: Lucas Digne has to step up after latest Alex Moreno injury news

Alex Moreno is set to miss three weeks through injury, and now Lucas Digne has to step up for Aston Villa in the run-in.

Unai Emery’s squad has struggled with injuries all season and to make matters worse on Wednesday (17 April), Birmingham Mail journalist John Townley reported via X that Moreno is injured again.

The Spanish full-back missed a large portion of the season due to an injury sustained last campaign and will now miss more vital games.

Townley said that he will miss “up to three weeks after sustaining a calf injury”. This will see him ruled out of the Lille clash and Premier League matches against Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Lucas Digne has to step up for Aston Villa

Moreno has featured in just 20 Premier League games this season which includes 11 starts. In that time he has scored two goals without adding any assists [FotMob].

He got injured against Liverpool in May 2023 and never returned to the matchday squad properly until November in over six months out.

This resulted in Digne staying with the Villans over the summer despite links, by the Daily Mail to Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia. He has since made 28 Premier League appearances and contributed to a goal and three assists in that time [FotMob].

He has started the last four games under Emery as the Villans have conceded eight goals, winning two of those games.

In his most recent appearance, against Arsenal, he grabbed an assist for Leon Bailey’s opener, a high point of his performance. According to FotMob, he had a 66 per cent pass success rate, 25 per cent cross success and no ground duels won.

It must be said that against stern opposition in the Gunners, he was under constant pressure from Bukayo Saka which impacted his game.

Moving forward into the Lille, Bournemouth and Chelsea games, Digne must improve in these metrics if Villa are to secure a Champions League spot.
