Aston Villa ‘inquest’ expected by Troy Deeney after what he saw happen in loss v Man City
Troy Deeney has blasted Ezri Konsa and Nicolo Zaniolo for their role in Manchester City’s second goal as Aston Villa lost 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on 3 April.
The Villa pair were part of Robin Olsen’s wall but both turned as Phil Foden struck his free-kick, allowing the ball to pass between them and nestle in the corner of the net, putting City 2-1 up just before the break.
And Deeney was not impressed with either player, saying on talkSPORT: “It’s gone through the wall.
“Konsa and Zaniolo have both turned, they’re supposed to take it on the chest. That’s really, really poor from Aston Villa.
“There will be an inquest into that.”
Aston Villa paid the price for sloppy error against Manchester City
Villa had fought back from Rodri’s opening goal at the Etihad, with young striker Jhon Duran equalising for the visitors with a fine finish.
However, with half-time approaching, Douglas Luiz conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box that could have passed without incident, had Zaniolo and Konsa simply held their ground.
The goal could hardly have come at a worse time for Villa and Foden took full advantage of the fact that Unai Emery’s men needed to open up and push for a second equaliser, completing his hat-trick with two superb second-half strikes.

The defeat leaves their top-four spot in danger, with Tottenham two points behind in fifth but with a game in hand.
Villa’s run-in looks challenging, too, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Brighton and Liverpool to come in their final seven Premier League fixtures, as well as a tricky two-legged tie against Ligue 1 outfit Lille in the Conference League.
