Aston Villa Women can breathe sigh of relief despite 4-0 Continental Cup thrashing v Arsenal
Aston Villa Women went crashing out of the Continental Cup at the hands of Arsenal on Wednesday (6 March).
It was a real rout from the North London outfit, with the hosts defeating Carla Ward’s side 4-0, with Stina Blackstenius stealing the show with a hat-trick.
Frida Maanum also netted for the home side, with all four goals arriving before the half-time whistle at Meadow Park.
It was a fine night for Arsenal, but a very disappointing night for the Midlands club, although the latter do have a silver lining following the loss.
Aston Villa Women can focus on WSL campaign after Arsenal loss
The exit from the Continental Cup means that Ward and her players can now focus all of their energy on the Women’s Super League (WSL) campaign.
The Midlands outfit currently sit eighth place in the league table, having won just five of their 15 matches so far.
All involved can now breathe a sigh of relief and really make a strong push towards a good run of form in the league, something that has been missing from the team so far this season.
They have the perfect opportunity to bounce back, with fellow strugglers Everton up next on Saturday (16 March).
Making that game against the 10th-placed Merseyside club is the following match, with third-placed Arsenal making a trip to the Midlands shortly after.
Ward’s side can seemingly give up on a relatively high league finish this season, with all efforts now needing to be put into moving as far away from the bottom of the standings as possible.
