Aston Villa: Hidden numbers looked at after new PSR update at Villa Park

Dan Plumley has insisted that the hidden numbers of this financial year for Aston Villa will be interesting after their massive 2022-23 losses were confirmed.

Villa jumped ahead of the narrative to share their £119.6million losses ahead of their accounts being published, with deductions still to come off.

The football finance expert admitted that Champions League qualification could change things this season, with the club confirming they are safe over any potential PSR breaches.

“The club in many ways got ahead of the narrative of that with the press release,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“We’ve seen the UEFA report, we’ve seen the press release from the club, we’re just waiting for the full accounts to come out on Companies House, but the club getting ahead of that position, stating they’re ok against the regulations.

We can look at the raw numbers that we can see, but we know there is some averaging out to be done because of COVID, we know there are some COVID losses to claw back, anything related to infrastructure, anything in youth development and women’s development, we know there have been plans for the stadium so some of those numbers may be linked to that as well.

It’s a big loss for that year, they did turn a small profit the year before which will help, I think it was £400,000 profit so they were pretty much at break even, so there is a lot to take into that when you’re just looking at those numbers.

The club are saying they will be ok which is obviously what you would expect them to say given the other cases we have got at the minute, but it might impact them.

I’d be looking further forward with this and looking at what’s happening in the period now that we are in that we can’t see yet where we know they have spent money and what might happen in the transfer market moving forward, with again, the big question mark of does Champions League football change their strategy a little bit?

They are bound to say that and they will feel like they are in range given the deductions and things, but there is a present-day situation that we must consider as to where Villa go in the future linked to European qualification and what competition that is in.”

Premier League breach at Aston Villa coming?

Thankfully, this was batted away before anyone could make any assumptions, with Everton and Nottingham Forest facing new points deductions.

Simply qualifying for the Champions League would bring in £50million to Villa Park and open up new doors for revenue for the club, something that could be exploited.

That is looking more important than ever right now.
