Aston Villa must sign ‘upgrade’ if Jacob Ramsey leaves Villa Park amid £50m development
We’re delighted to welcome Aston Villa podcaster Ty Bracey as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Aston Villa must sign an “upgrade” on Jacob Ramsey if he is allowed to leave the club in the summer, according to Ty Bracey.
The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reported on 29 January that Newcastle United made an approach to sign the 22-year-old in the January transfer window.
He added that both Tottenham and Bayern Munich also hold an interest in the English midfielder, but it will take a fee upwards of £50million to secure his services.
Bracey believes it’s important that Villa hold onto the academy product for now despite him not managing to rediscover his form of last season since returning from injury recently.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “If you read the articles, there was never anything pinpointing him actually leaving. It was things like ‘should he leave’, those types of things.
“Obviously, Newcastle denied that they were in for him as well. He’s just not the type of player Villa would want to lose in January.
“He’s still yet to get back to his best ways since coming back from his injury, but we know the player is still in there. I think it’s important we hold onto him for now.
“It all depends on what is the right piece of business. If they feel for FFP they can offload him and get someone in better, then if that’s the best piece of business, that’s the best piece of business.

“But it has to be one of those things where we can’t get rid of him and get someone worse through the door.
“I would say it’s important that if he is to be sold in the summer, we have to get an upgrade on him.”
Aston Villa will have a decision to make on Jacob Ramsey
It’s a difficult situation for Villa as Ramsey isn’t a player they would probably want to sell, but if they need to balance the books in the summer, he is likely to be the most viable option due to his homegrown status.
As Bracey points out, he hasn’t managed to get back to his best so far this season, having scored just one goal and laid on one assist in 17 appearances.
The situation is one to keep an eye on in the summer as clubs may look to land the attacking midfielder on a cut-price deal if he becomes available for a transfer at Villa Park.
