Ty Bracey revealed that keeper Joe Gauci reminds him of Emiliano Martinez after seeing footage of the new Aston Villa recruit.
Villa announced on their website on Thursday (1 February) that the Australian international has signed for the club for an undisclosed fee from Adelaide United.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted on Thursday that the deal was worth up to £1.3million for the 23-year-old and that he’s signed a deal until June 2028 at Villa Park.
Bracey believes it’s a “massive opportunity” for Gauci to come in and learn alongside Argentinian international Martinez, who he claims is the “best goalkeeper in the world”.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “I think it’s important that we got another keeper in. Our backup should be someone who is a future prospect for the club.
“I’ve watched some highlight reels of him and he’s not a bad shot-stopper at all. He’s very similar to Emi Martinez in terms of when he’s facing a one-on-one, he makes himself very big and is a shot-stopper.
“He’s definitely one for the future, but we’ve got a great coaching team and, obviously, the best goalkeeper in the world, so loads for him to learn from.
“In terms of career development, it’s a massive opportunity for him. It’s a good bit of business from us.”
Joe Gauci could challenge Robin Olsen at Aston Villa
It’s so far unclear whether or not Gauci will be joining Villa as backup to Martinez or if he’ll also be behind the experienced Robin Olsen in the pecking order.
Unai Emery was keen to bolster his options in between the sticks after Filip Marschall was allowed to join League Two side MK Dons on loan during the January transfer window.
Gauci made 10 appearances for Adelaide this season before joining the Villans, having kept two clean sheets for the Australian side.
