Deal agreed: Aston Villa close in on Joe Gauci transfer, medical done – David Ornstein

Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Adelaide United over the signing of goalkeeper Joe Gauci, according to David Ornstein.

The journalist shared via The Athletic’s transfer blog [31 January, 09:51] that Gauci has also completed a medical ahead of the proposed move.

Villa are now looking to complete the final parts of the paperwork ahead of the 11pm deadline on Thursday (1 February).

Ornstein adds that Gauci’s contract at Villa Park, once finalised, is set to return through until the summer of 2028.

Another option

Gauci is not exactly a high-profile name, but he has plenty of experience in the A-League and has also been capped twice by Australia.

Going by this latest update, there is no reason why a deal cannot be wrapped up with a bit of time to spare.

Should that be the case, it will be the third and final signing of the window after the arrival of Kosta Nedeljkovic and imminent capture of Morgan Rogers.

This signing will provide Unai Emery with another option between the sticks, with Emiliano Martinez the undisputed first choice for now.

Gauci will not want to sit on the bench forever, but he will consider this a step up in his career and he will inevitably get chances to shine.

For now, the 23-year-old will continue representing his country at the Asian Cup while hopefully getting this transfer over the line.

Results on the pitch for Villa may not have been great of late, but they have been some shrewd acquisitions in the January transfer window.
