Aston Villa can leverage new January transfer plan against FFP – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist, he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa

Dan Plumley has insisted that Aston Villa targeting younger players in the January transfer window will help their Financial Fair Play situation.

After spending big in the summer on the likes of Moussa Diaby, Monchi is using January to target the likes of Middlesbrough winger Morgan Rogers, after signing Kosta Nedeljkovic from Red Star.

The finance expert admitted that long-term investment can be used as leverage against FFP with the strategy to be lauded by those outside looking in.

“I think it’s a little bit of everything,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“It obviously helps from an FFP perspective if you’re signing younger players where the transfer fees are going to be smaller.

You’re looking at investing in the long term, we know you can look to leverage that in the future with FFP and the contract situation, and investing in young talent is to be lauded as a good strategy for sure.

I think that then goes onto the bigger picture for Villa as well, and that’s not an FFP position necessarily, that’s how do they look to grow that squad and how do they kick on in the future.

When you’re looking at talent like that and investing in that younger talent around the market, particularly the European football market, that strategy has benefits across the board.

Of course, there are still risks in it because those players are young, they’re going to need time and may never realise their potential, we have seen that happen in the past.

As a strategy in the medium to long term, there’s certainly clear benefits and another example of a club in a good spot at the minute, both financially and on the pitch, and are willing to invest.”
