£50m+ windfall now on cards at Aston Villa – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist, he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa.

Dan Plumley has insisted that Champions League qualification would be worth a guaranteed £50million to Aston Villa as they continue to impress in the Premier League.

Wins over Manchester City and Arsenal at Villa Park this week have seen Unai Emery’s side catapult themselves to third behind Liverpool and the Gunners, eight points clear of Spurs in fifth.

The finance expert admitted that windfall would grow with the additional matchday revenue and commercial deals that can be generated through the competition.

“It’s a big difference,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“Villa would lose a little bit in the market coefficient historically because a lot of the money is based around your historical performance in UEFA competitions, so it takes a while to build that up.

Notwithstanding that, because the English coefficient is so strong, you’re still looking at a conservative £50million total, at least, for getting to the group stages for an English club, that’s based on current figures for this year, but you would expect it to be broadly similar.

You’re going to get £35-40million in participation fees alone, that’s linked to participation, the English TV market pool and you’ve then got the additional matchdays and commercial deals you can generate.

For Aston Villa having not been in there for a long time, it’s still worth £50million.

That’s a substantial amount of money compared to the little European football they’ve had in recent seasons, so it really is a substantial amount of money in revenue terms that you can bring in through Champions League group stage qualification.”
