Jamie Carragher predicts Aston Villa result v Arsenal in Premier League showdown at Villa Park

Jamie Carragher has predicted Arsenal to win against Aston Villa at Villa Park on 9 December, despite the recent form of the home side and the domination they showed against Manchester City.

The former Liverpool defender claimed that despite the win against Pep Guardiola’s side, this table-topping Arsenal team should prove too much to handle at Villa Park.

However, given the extent of their domination against Man City, Villa will not fear anybody when playing at home, and another top performance could see them blow Arsenal away.

In his weekly Premier League predictions for Super 6, Carragher insisted: “Aston Villa pulled off a brilliant win against Manchester City midweek but I think top-of-the-table Arsenal will just be too strong for them,” giving a score prediction of 2-1 to the visitors.

Villa restricted Manchester City to just two shots in the game at Villa Park, showing how strong their defensive structure was, and with Arsenal limited to just 0.57 and 0.99 expected goals in tough away visits to Newcastle and Chelsea respectively, they have shown they can struggle going forward. Away trips to some of the league’s better teams have proved difficult for Arsenal, losing to Newcastle and West Ham and drawing with Chelsea, while their 1-0 win at Brentford was an impressive result, but the xG of 1.19-1.65 suggests on another day it would have been a draw.

Villa meanwhile had a 100 per cent corner swing against Man City, with their six to City’s zero, and Douglas Luiz’s ability on corner deliveries could cause trouble for David Raya in the Arsenal goal, having proven already this season he can struggle in the air. [Sofascore]

Elijah Adebayo’s goal for Luton as well as the fluke goal scored by Mykhailo Mudryk at Stamford Bridge are two incidents that spring to mind which saw Raya struggle with high balls – something Villa and Luiz could capitalise on.

If Villa are to secure a result against another of the Premier League’s top sides, it will most likely come at Villa Park, where Emery’s team have won 14 consecutive games and proved to be a formidable outfit.

Given their dominance against City, if they can show those levels again, another huge win should be on the cards.
