Aston Villa may be in line for FIFA compensation – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist, he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa.

Dan Plumley has insisted that Aston Villa could be in line for FIFA compensation after an injury picked up by John McGinn during the international break.

The Scotland midfielder hobbled off during the 3-3 draw with Norway, creating an injury scare, although he may still feature against Tottenham at the weekend [London World].

If McGinn was kept out for 28 days or longer, the finance expert shared that Villa would be in line for compensation from FIFA’s Club Protection Programme which is based on a fixed salary.

“To the best of my knowledge, yes,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“I’ve dug around a little bit for this and the most recent thing I found is a couple of years ago, but assuming that is still in place, then yes.

It’s something called the FIFA Club Protection Programme, it’s a policy which covers the injury risk of players who are released by their clubs to play international football.

Crucially, that injury needs to be bad enough to prevent the player from playing for more than 28 consecutive days, so a little niggle or knock will not be covered, it has to be 28 days or more.

What happens then is clubs are compensated based on the fixed salary, not bonus related, for a maximum of a year calculated on a daily pro-rata basis up to a maximum of €7.5million [£6.5m] per injury.

There is a lot of technicality in that, but to the best of my knowledge, that is in play.

It has to be over an injury that keeps the player out for at least a month, and then they would claim compensation based on that dependent on time out.”
