Alex Moreno loses Aston Villa spot amid recent injury issue

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…

Alan Hutton doubts Alex Moreno will be starting for Aston Villa any time soon due to the form Lucas Digne has been in this season.

Moreno, 30, became Unai Emery’s first-choice left-back after he was signed from Real betis in January, forcing Digne, 30, down the pecking order at Villa Park.

However, the Spanish full-back missed the start of the season due to injury, allowing ex-Barcelona ace Digne to come in and seize the opportunity to start every week.

Digne’s form has been brilliant and Hutton expects Emery to continue sticking with the Frenchman until Moreno can show himself to be more worthy of a starting berth in the Premier League.

“Moreno’s been injured so that’s why we haven’t seen him recently and Digne has played at a level where, if he sticks to that, he’s going to play,” Hutton told Villa News. “A lot of the width comes from full-backs getting forward and he does that very well.

Moreno was bought for big money and obviously, Unai Emery knows him well.

He’ll get opportunities, just like [Leon] Bailey, [Jhon] Duran or [Youri] Tielemans or anybody else who comes in. They have to show they’re willing to play a specific way or the manager will revert to the way he knows best.”

Digne has scored one goal and supplied five assists in 14 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa this season.

Moreno is yet to make an appearance this season after an injury setback because he managed to make the bench for matches against Legia Warsaw and Crystal Palace in September.

In other Aston Villa news, the ball is in this player’s court after a reported behind-the-scenes bust-up with Unai Emery.
