Aston Villa face revenue hit as Villa Park development confirmed – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist, he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa.

Dan Plumley has insisted that Aston Villa will take a short-term revenue hit once the works get underway to redevelop Villa Park next year.

Birmingham Live has reported that the £100million works on the North Stand will start at the end of the season, and will continue until just before the 2026/27 season.

Plumley admitted that the closure of the area will result in a revenue hit, although broadcasting money should cover some of that with no one questioning the long-term potential to maximise gains.

“A marginal hit in the short term for maximising gains in the long term,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“Absolutely no one is going to question that decision in the long term in terms of what it can give you, the strategy is quite clear there.

The return will outlay the short-term hit on the revenue position and because the club can see it coming up front, you can budget accordingly for that.

Obviously, Premier League broadcasting money will cushion that, commercial partnerships will cushion that, if they’ve got a European run in there and performances on the pitch remain high, that can cushion it.

You can offset that challenge there of a short-term dip in revenue with the long-term picture and that will be communicated in the strategy, ‘we know that this will hurt us short term, but it’s relatively, not a huge hit to maximise gains in the long run’.”
