BBC Sport pundit blown away by Ezri Konsa development at Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton is delighted to see Ezri Konsa putting pen to paper on a new “long-term contract” at Aston Villa.
It was confirmed on Wednesday (20 September) that Konsa, 25, has agreed fresh terms at Villa Park. The Athletic reports that the defender’s new deal is five years long and will run until the summer of 2028.
Since joining from Brentford in 2019 for a deal worth £12million, Jonda has made 145 appearances in all competitions.
Due to different injury issues, Konsa has been Villa’s go-to man in the heart of the defence and Hutton believes that after new deals were dished out for John McGinn and Tyrone Mings, it’s only fair that the ex-Charlton defender gets one too.
“He thoroughly deserves it,” Hutton told Villa News.
“He’s been outstanding and if you look around about the defence, he’s been the mainstay. There’s been a lot of change so it’s been him plus one.
“He signed for £12million a good few years ago now, he’s played a lot of games and a lot of minutes and he’s been the defender that you’ve needed.
“He’s lost goals and made mistakes, of course he has. But they play a high line and he’ll learn from it.
“It’s difficult at times but I think if you look at the likes of Tyrone Mings and John McGinn signing new deals, it’s very fair that Konsa gets that as well.”
Konsa has played every minute of every Premier League game for Aston Villa so far this season.
It remains to be seen if he’ll remain in the starting line-up for the Europa Conference League group stage clash with Legia Warsaw in Poland on Thursday night (21 September).
In the qualification clash with Hibs, Konsa started both games but was substituted off in the 75th and 45th minutes respectively.
