Leander Dendoncker expected to quit Aston Villa in next 48 hours amid £12m+ transfer news
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton expects Leander Dendoncker to leave Aston Villa for Fenerbahce if the Turkish club comes up with an offer for the midfielder.
Dendoncker, 28, is yet to play in the Premier League this season for Villa, with his only appearance in claret and blue coming as a second-half substitute in the second leg of the Europa Conference League qualifier win against Hibernian on 31 August.
The ex-Wolves midfielder was a bit-part player for the Villans last season too as he made just seven Premier League starts for both Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery.
In the summer, Villa strengthened their midfield options, leaving Dendoncker further down Emery’s pecking order.
However, the Turkish transfer window is still open until Friday (15 September) and Fenerbahce have emerged in the running to sign the Belgium international.
Turkish news outlet Takvim reported on 13 September that Dendoncker has been recommended to Fenerbahce as they seek out midfield reinforcements before the end of play on Friday.
Hutton can see that being a deal that goes ahead.
When asked if Emery will stand in the way of Dendoncker leaving, Hutton told Villa News: “No, I don’t think so.
“There are certain situations where you have a bloated squad and you’re trying to trim it and there are players wanted by clubs where their transfer window is still open, you don’t have to replace that guy and it’s a good situation.
“I’m still not a fan of them being open when other transfer windows are shut. I don’t think it’s fair.
“If a move to Fenerbahce comes up, I think it’s something Dendoncker would look at and want.
“I know they’re after a midfielder so it’s a move that can suit him.
“He’s not getting playing time at Aston Villa so it could suit all parties.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if something like that came up.”
According to Takvim, Dendoncker has a market value of £12.9million.
In other Aston Villa news, a new signing has already held crunch talks with Emery and a BBC Sport pundit has reacted.
