Dan Bardell: Clement Lenglet 'not the same' as Tyrone Mings best short-term choice for Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
Clement Lenglet’s season-long loan move to Aston Villa is the best the club could do for a short-term replacement for Tyrone Mings despite lacking the same ability, according to Dan Bardell.
When the club confirmed (14 August) that Mings would face a substantial period of time on the sidelines with a “significant knee injury” sustained against Newcastle United, many speculated that Villa would remain active in the market to secure a replacement.
Emery’s prayers were answered when Barcelona centre-back Lenglet was brought in on loan following a spell at Tottenham. While an experienced international player, many have wondered if he is enough to replace Mings’ ability in the Villa backline.
Bardell is one fan who is concerned and has admitted Lenglet is “purely cover” for the Englishman and that his “chief concern” regarding the Frenchman’s move is his lack of physical presence. However, he claims that Villa “couldn’t have done much better” for a short-term replacement, as they “can’t live without” a left-sided centre-back.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I think it’s purely cover for Tyrone Mings. If Mings doesn’t get injured, then you don’t see Clement Lenglet sign for Villa.
“I think Emery had in mind a certain way that he was going to play this season and that would have involved Mings. So they thought to reevaluate a little bit and have decided that they do need another defensive player, they can’t live without another left-sided centre-back.
“In terms of getting short-term cover in, I don’t think Villa could have done much better than Lenglet. My chief concern is that he’s not the same type of centre-back as Mings and that’s what Villa have lost, someone who’s going to dominate from set-pieces and someone who wins the aerial duels.
