Pau Torres Spain call-up ‘unfortunate’ amid poor Aston Villa form, must learn from Unai Emery
We’re delighted to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa columnist each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the club…
It is “unfortunate” that new Aston Villa signing Pau Torres has been called up for international duty, according to Dan Bardell.
The Spaniard has come to Villa Park with high expectations following his excellent form for La Liga side Villarreal but has struggled in a number of performances in claret and blue. However, he still earned a spot in Luis de la Fuente’s national side to face Cyprus and Georgia in their Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Torres was subject to his fair share of criticism after Villa’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool on the weekend, losing the ball to Mohamed Salah to concede the corner which ultimately led to Dominik Szoboszlai’s opener and completely losing Darwin Nunez in the build-up to their second.

While it is obviously a benefit to have a squad filled with full international players, Bardell suggests that Torres’ call-up has come at an “unfortunate” time as he could benefit from learning more from Unai Emery to develop his ability to work in the squad.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “It’s unfortunate that Pau Torres has been called up for the Spain squad.
“It probably would have been good for Emery to work with him over the international break.”
In other Aston Villa news, a new signing is in line to earn his first Villa start after an impressive Liverpool cameo.
